Ajmer Sharif Dargah History
This Mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Humayun, Akbar, Shah Jahan, and Jahangir. In the Mosque, there is a mausoleum of Sufi Saint Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti, who came from Persia and was the founder of Islam in India. He was a great preacher of Islam and was known for his tremendous teachings and serenity.
Hazrat Khwaja dedicated his entire life for humanity. In 1236, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti died in this residence. Akbar along with his Begum (Queen) used to come to Ajmer Sharif Dargah for mannat of a son and when his this desire got fulfilled, then Akbar built a tomb for Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti here between 1571 and 1580 and also donated huge utensils for cooking in 1575AD.
In 1911, Mir Usman Ali Khan from Hyderabad built entrance gate of tomb called Nizam Gate and Akbari mosque built with white marble by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji was a great devotee of Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti, who built Buland Gate of Dargah.
Ajmer Sharif dargah Architecture
Constructed in the thirteenth century, this mosque witness Mughal-styled architecture. Starting from the entrance, the huge Buland Darwaza navigates you to the second courtyard of the mosque. The tomb of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, the great Sufi saint, is preserved in the domed chamber, encircled with marble screen and silver fence.
Via Dargah Bazaar, the Dargah doorway can be found which is completely engraved in silver. This doorway navigates to the internal patio which has two large cauldrons having a capacity of about 4480 kg and 2240 kg.
Shah Jahan’s daughter made a prayer room for women devotees in the Dargah. Inside the mosque, there are crypts of Saint’s daughter Bibi Hafiz Jama, of Bhishti and of Shah Jahan’s daughter, Chimni Begum as well. The major tomb has been crowned by lavishing white dome.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah timings are:
6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
In between, it remains closed for one hour from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There is no entrance fee to visit and pray in this monument.
Dress code for Ajmer Sharif
There is no strict dress code for Ajmer Sharif. But yes, all the devotees, either men or women are required to cover their head with handkerchief or dupatta or caps to enter the mosque.

Jaipur airport is the closest one, present at a distance of 136 KMs and takes 2:30 hours after reaching the airport.
- By Rail
Ajmer is perfectly connected to all the major parts of the country via rail. So, one can easily reach this city and further can hire a vehicle to reach the mosque.
- By Road
You can ply by taking a bus here. Ajmer bus stand has connected all areas of the country, viz. Ajmer Sharif from Delhi can be reached by crossing the distance of 400km. Ajmer bus stands just about 3 kilometers away so from there, you can even hire a cab and reach in just 10 minutes.
