Haji Ali Dargah

Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque, located on an island on the coast of Worli in the southern part of Mumbai. This is the heart of the city. Dargah is one of the most recognizable destinations of Mumbai. Haji Ali was created by a wealthy Muslim businessman who became a saint named Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. Haji Ali Dargah was built in 1431 AD.

The structure is located in the area of 4,500 meters and is surrounded by crisp, marble pillars, which are still astonishing today. This 400-year-old structure, steeped in Mumbai, is thin and disturbed in many places and the structural upgradation of this wonderful structure began in 2008. Despite caste, religion, and creed, people from all over the world visit Haji Ali Dargah. Haji Ali Dargah has become a famous pilgrim place. Most of the tourists come to the grave of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari to get blessings for wealth, health, marriage etc. Special occasions such as the anniversary of the Saint or Id-ul-Fir, special events or programs are organized at Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai.

It is believed that on the way to Mecca, Haji Ali died. However, in another legend, it has been said that Haji Ali drowned at that point where the dargah stands today. Since then, the monument has been in the custody of Mumbai coast.

Haji Ali Dargah is made of ‘Makrana’ marble, the same white marble which Samrat Shah Jahan used to build the Taj Mahal. Haji Ali Dargah has two important monuments – Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and the grave of the mosque. The architecture of this monument reflects the style and pattern of Mughal and Indo-Islamic architecture. Haji Ali Dargah has a space of 4,500 square meters. The work of mirror with artistic marble pillars, kaleidoscopic patterns, and towers is a shrine in the center, making the monument a grand sight for everyone.

In the memory of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, in the memory of Namaz-e-Isha (17th), a special event is organized on 16th of every Islamic month and prayer is held.
