Some stories interpret the formation of Trimbakeshwar temple. It is believed that the land of Trimabak is the land of sages. Gautama Rishi was one of the sages who lived here with his wife Ahilya. The land was surrounded by heavy drought, so Gautam Rishi urged the God of water, Lord Varun to solve the problem of water scarcity. Lord Varun accepted his prayers and provided the unlimited supply of water. However, other sages became jealous of Gautam Rishi, therefore, they prayed from God Ganesha to send a cow to the farm of Gautam Rishi, which was full of crops. But, somehow the cow died.

After this, he went to Lord Shiva with his wife and went to seek punishment for that crime. Lord Shiva was very pleased and then, he ordered the Ganga River to flow on the land. River Brahmagiri passes through the hill and Gautam Rishi has collected it, which is called Kushvrata. Then, the sage requested Lord Shiva to stay there. By accepting their request, God became in the form of a linga to be there.
