Commonly pronounced as Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham, the Chamunda Devi temple is considered as more than 700 years old. This famous shrine is located in district Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India.
The word Chamunda denotes a Devi, the supreme mother goddess. The name is the combination of Chanda and Munda, two monsters which Devi had killed. Chamunda Devi Temple history states that around 400 years ago the king and a Brahmin priest prayed to Devi-Ma for permission to move the temple to some easily accessible location. Devi appeared to the priest in a dream, and navigated the priest to dig a big hole in a particular spot. There he will find an ancient idol which should be worshipped as her form after installing it in the temple.
It is also said that the king navigated goons to bring the idol. Although they were able to locate it, however, not able to lift it up. Another time Devi appeared to the priest in a dream & explained that the men could not lift the holy relic because they considered it an ordinary stone. Also, Devi instructed him to get up early in the morning, after taking bath and go to the place in a respectful manner. The priest did just as Devi directed him and now he could easily lift that idol.
The temple holds a Kund in it where devotees take a holy dip and get eternal bliss. A cave-like scoop, present at the backside of the temple, has the importance of being representing an embodiment of Shiva in the form of stone Lingam.
